Who I am
I am Dr. Ludovico Piccolo, a certified psychologist by the region of Campania (Italy) - (number: 9787).

The most important thing in the psychologist's work is to establish a climate of trust and security,
in order to give people the opportunity to express themselves freely and to explore their problems in a validating, non-judgmental and supportive environment.
The psychologist and the client park together in a space of reflection,
which also becomes a place of understanding of the others and the self.

"Why this intro?" you would say.
Because to begin a journey together, first of all we must get to know each other,
which is a necessary condition to establish a climate of trust and security,
which are based, among other things, on sincerity.
For this reason, I'll simply break the ice by telling you something about me.

Like many others, it took me a while to find my vocation.
After I graduated from high school, I had no clear view of what I would have do after, as it often happens,
I really had no idea of what I was going to do.

After a while, I rediscovered a true passion for psychology and later on, for neuroscience.
I therefore decided to make that jump, despite the skepticism of some relatives or friends,
who did not believe in me or in the profession I was going to choose later on.
I was fascinated by the mystery that surrounds the functioning of the mind and the brain,
their interdependence, in particular by the potential of using stem cells in neurodegenerative diseases,
by normal and pathological aging, and by the influence of many factors such as motivation, our strong beliefs,
family and social environment in which we grew up, our lifestyle, etc...
which can affect the quality of our life and our way of perceiving and interpreting reality.
I have chosen to adopt the Biopsychosocial Model to approach the person.
According to this approach, every condition of health or disease is
the consequence of the intricate and variable interaction of:
-
biological factors (genetic, biochemical, etc...)
-
psychological factors (mood, personality, behavior, etc...)
-
social factors (cultural, family, socio-economic, etc...)
I think nowadays, after so many developments made in the academia and on the field,
it is no longer functional to become a regular follower of 1 particular approach
(eg. Psychoanalytic/Psychodynamic, Cognitive-Behavioral, Humanistic-Existential, Systemic, etc...),
rather I think it is much more productive, especially for the client who took the courage to look for help,
to choose an integrated approach.
Here's an example: let's imagine we are at the market, and there are several baskets in front of us.
Within these baskets there are several varieties of tomatoes. They are different, but still, they are tomatoes.
Likewise, I strongly believe that the psychologist, certified and trained in the last few years,
as well as psychologists of the future must have the wisdom to integrate
(especially through continuous training, dialogue with colleagues and the continuous study of the literature)
knowledge, techniques and tools into their formation that do not necessarily belong
to the approach they decided to specialize in.
That means taking from every basket what we need in order to help, within the limits of our expertise,
the person who decided to consult us.
This will help us refine our hypotheses in order to provide evidence-based and person-centred interventions.
