What is the difference between a Psychologist and a Counselor ?
The Italian law does not officially recognize the figures of the counselor or the coach:
consequently anyone can define themselves as such at any time and with any level of competence.
On November 10, 2021 the UNI (Ente di normazione italiano) Technical Committee refused the recognition of the professional titles of Counselor and Coach "because of the firm opposition of the CNOP (Consiglio Nazionale Ordine Psicologi)" .
For his specific field of intervention, the counselor should not be confused with the psychologist, psychotherapist or psychiatrist.
In fact, the counseling activity does not involve the use of intervention techniques and methodologies typical of the professional figures mentioned above, such as: the administration or prescription of drugs (in the case of the psychiatrist), the use of psychodiagnostic tests, the drafting of certificates and reports on the treatment carried out and on the diagnosis detected or the psychological evaluations.
The counselor deals with people who need support or help to deal with relationships or decision-making problems, so without the need for different skills and specializations.
Any activity that overlaps with those of the doctor in psychological techniques, the psychologist and the psychotherapist is punishable under criminal law for "abuse of the profession of psychologist".
What is the difference between the psychologist, psychotherapist and the psychiatrist ?
Psychotherapists, psychologists and psychiatrists may overlap in the areas they cover, but there are differences among each profession and what they can offer.
A psychologist specializes in the study of behaviors and mental processes. This includes emotional and cognitive processes, how people interact with their environments, and how they interact with other people. Psychologists help people learn to understand and handle different life problems and mental health issues. A psychologist diagnoses and treats mental disorders and behavioral problems. They may provide treatment for chronic problems or acute problems, and they can do so in an individual, family, or group setting. Psychologists help people handle stressful events, beat addictions, or manage illnesses. People may seek counseling or treatments from psychologists for things such as traumatic experiences, a death in the family, or long-term anxiety. Psychologists cannot recommend or order medications.
The most common type of treatment used by psychologists is "talking cure" better known as "talk therapy".

A psychotherapist may be a psychologist, psychiatrist or other mental health professional who specialized in psychotherapy.
Psychotherapists require approval of their licensing boards to practice in the mental health field. Therapists provide mental health diagnosis and develop a treatment plan. There are many different types of therapy such as psychoanalysis and psychodynamic therapies, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectal behavioral therapy (DBT), Humanistic therapy and many others. Therapists cannot recommend or order medications, but they can refer you for evaluation for medication or other treatments. Therapy can be short or long term depending on the problem/diagnosis and its severity. Therapy can be done in an individual, family, couple, or group setting.

A psychiatrist specializes in the study, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of emotional, mental, behavioral, and developmental issues. Psychiatrists diagnose mental disorders and can assess both the mental and physical effects of a disorder.
Unlike psychologists and psychotherapists, psychiatrists are medical doctors, or physicians, with a degree in medicine. As medical doctors psychiatrists can prescribe medication and might refer a patient to a psychologist or therapist for additional counseling or therapy.

How much time does a session last?
A session tend to last from 45 min to 1 hr, but, if I believe that progress has been made or time has been productive enough, the session could last less. On the contrary, the session could last a bit longer if certain topics or key points need to be further discussed, so the duration may vary.
Any variation is subject to an evaluation by the psychologist on the basis of the objectives, validated methods and tools.
What happens during the first meetings?
The first meetings are needed to get to know each other and to establish the objectives to achieve together.
For me, it is important that you take your time to understand if you feel comfortable with me and in my office.
One of the main factors that make counseling successful is the "therapeutic alliance",
(i.e. the partnership between the psychologist and the client that allows them to achieve goals
through agreed-upon tasks, based on trust and mutual acceptance).
This is why it is important that we both feel comfortable and motivated so that we can walk through the same path.
Our meetings will be your time to explore what you’re currently struggling with.
Don’t worry about saying the ‘wrong’ things or asking questions – nothing is ‘wrong’.
Everything discussed is an opportunity to explore and understand the world through your eyes.
From the second meeting onwards, the goals will be set:
What are your needs ?
What do you want to achieve ?
What difficulties and problems are you dealing with ? how do you deal with them ?
The goals we set together will always be kept in mind during our journey
to understand if we are moving in the right direction,
what need to be improved or changed,
and if you feel satisfied once we achieved them.
Then, we will decide how to organize our agenda: the number of weekly or monthly meetings, the duration, etc...
Depending on the type of difficulty you want to address and on your availability,
the duration of the treatment and the frequency of the meetings may vary.

These and other details are agreed together during the first meetings or
at another time during the treatment, when and if it will be necessary.

SCHEDULE YOUR FIRST APPOINTMENT, IT'S FREE !

At the end of the first appointment, you are free to decide to schedule a new appointment or not.
How long does the treatment last ?
The duration depends on the objectives to be achieved and the type of problem to be dealt with.

What is a neuropsychological assessment, what does it involve and how much does it cost?
The Neuropsychological assessment provides a "picture" of the cognitive, behavioral and functional profile of an individual,
in collaboration with the referring physician, it is used to obtain a specific diagnosis and
to plan a treatment which provides psychological support and rehabilitation.

The neuropsychologist's task will be to:

-
recognize the presence of any intellectual deficit, cognitive or functional impairment following specific conditions (e.g. Traumatic Brain Injury or Dementias).
-
recognize and differentiate the cognitive decline of normal aging from MCI (Mild Cognitive Impairment) or Dementia, and monitor the person through follow ups over the time.
-
Identify the person's weaknesses and strengths, abilities and residual resources.
-
Evaluate together with the person and his/her family the possibility and modalities of a treatment which includes psychological support and rehabilitation.

The neuropsychological assessment can be divided in different stages:

-
An initial clinical interview with the patient.
-
An interview with a family member.
-
The administration of specific tests aimed at identifying any difficulties in cognitive and behavioral functions.
-
A final meeting for the discussion of the results and for the proposal of a possible intervention or follow-up treatment.

During the restitution interview, the clinician analyzes what emerged from the clinical-neuropsychological evaluation and provides a summary report in which, in addition to providing a "snapshot" of the patient's current cognitive status, explicit the strengths and weaknesses and on the basis of these, proposes a possible intervention or follow-up.
The neuropsychological evaluation of adults and the elderly is usually required by the:
-
neurologist
-
psychiatrist
-
geriatrician
-
general practitioner

The neurological pathologies that affect cognitive functions are:

-
Neurodegenerative diseases (e.g. Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis);
-
Head trauma/TBI;
-
cerebrovascular (e.g. stroke or brain hemorrhages, but also cognitive impairment due to cardiovascular disease);
-
neurosurgical interventions;
-
psychiatric pathologies

It may also be useful to request a neuropsychological evaluation if the person or a concerned family member begins to notice changes like forgetfulness, spatial or temporal disorientation, mood swings or personality changes, etc., so to know if these are simple physiological changes due to the aging or symptoms of a probable ongoing neurodegenerative disease.
The neuropsychological evaluation, in fact, is a useful tool for the early diagnosis of this pathology.
Furthermore, the neuropsychologist can:

-
propose a cognitive/psychosocial stimulation/rehabilitation program with follow-up.
-
Provide information and advice on how to best manage one's illness (for example, on how to manage cognitive or behavioral difficulties)
-
provide psychological support to the patient and caregivers in relation to the distress related to the new changes in the everyday life.

The duration of the neuropsychological assessment varies according to the purpose of the examination and the patient's resources.
It can last for an average of two hours (it is often advisable to divide the assessment into more than one session).

The neuropsychological counseling is useful to resolve the doubts that may arise in the patient or in caregivers who notice changes in the way of being and behaving (e.g. memory loss, concentration difficulties, language disorders, behavioral changes, etc ...).
The cost of a neuropsychological consultation of 60 minutes is 40 €.
The cost of a complete neuropsychological evaluation (i.e. anamnestic interview + administration and reporting of tests + drafting of the clinical report + final interview) is 180 €.
How can I pay ?
Payment is made in full after the professional service.
Accepted methods are checks, wire transfers or cash.

FAQs
Perché andare dallo psicologo?
-
-
Mettersi in discussione.
